Ma’s Secret Chickorade Recipe
We hatch and/or order chicks every year and it never fails that we forget that chicks need more than just plain water. As soon as there’s peeping someone is yelling “hey ma! We need more chickorade mix!”

Well here it is kids:
Ma’s Secret Chickorade Recipe
1 tbsp sugar
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp salt
1-3 tbsp Apple cider vinegar (with the mother)
1 gal water
Optional: colloidal silver
This will make a 1 gallon mix, but we prefer to make a bulk mix of dry mix.
Chickorade Dry Mix
3c sugar
1 cup baking soda
1 cup salt
An airtight container like this would work well
(Use a heaping tablespoon to add to your water)
Mix the dry ingredients in a repurposed plastic container and mix well. We keep a designated mixing tool in the container to make measuring easy.
When the chicks need water after their long hatching and/or travel we mix up a gallon and use it within a few days, rinsing well inbetween to avoid mold. This ratio works well for 50-100 chicks for several days of water. For smaller hatchings you can reduce the ratio.
This is why Chickorade works better than plain water.
–Sugar gives the chicks energy to grow (we use a natural cane sugar)
–Baking soda and salt are both an electrolyte to help the chicks stay hydrated. We use pink Himalayan salt because it has more minerals.
–Raw apple cider vinegar provides probitiocs and helps prevent pasty butt by helping to keep intestine flora in check and poo moving through. You can use up to 5tbsp if you are seeing an increase in pasty butt and it should help.
–Colloidal silver is optional, but if your chicks (or other animals) are sick and you don’t know what’s going on, a bit of that in their water will help. You can also use on wounds if they peck each other to help disinfect.
Although it isn’t a favorite flavor (opposed to a more sugary sports drink) if a human family member is sick this is a great, cheap, and easily to make alternative!
Helpful tips:
-Mix in warm, not hot water, and shake well between fills.
-Keep an extra funnel with your chick supplies to make filling easier.
-Keep a small jar of apple cider vinegar that seals in your chick area to use so you don’t need to run to your fridge everyday.
-Keep all tools and materials clean to keep chicks healthy.

Castor oil
Castor oil is a great tool in your medicine cabinet. It works as a great detoxifier, antibacterial, anti fungal, anti-inflammatory, and all over moisturizer (won’t clog pores)
Castor oil may be applied by rubbing a small amount on (a little goes a long way!), placing on a cotton or wool cloth (called packing) on affected area, wrapping it and applying heat over. Sometimes this is done overnight without heat. It may also be used by Drinking or swishing in the mouth.

After Bite all natural anti-itch roller bottles

Summer joys of sunbathing, water play, and hiking in the woods often get dismantled by bug season. Hoards of mosquitos, bees, and biting flies can quickly chase even the most resilient outdoorsy person inside to sadly stare out at the window of the most gorgeous, bug infested days of summer.
Many will put on long sleeves, hats, and pants to avoid the insects, others will apply chemical laden DEET or other sprays to discourage them. I have to say, in Northern Minnesota, the mosquitos here drink DEET for breakfast. They are vicious little things and some of their welts they leave can be dime sized.
So, the question becomes: what can we do after the bite? Mosquito bites especially can be itchy for days, it can lead children and adults both scratching to the point of bleeding.
This is where After Bite anti-itch roller bottles come in handy. With just a few ingredients and materials you have an easy applicator with natural ingredients that quickly reduce the itch and pain from bites and stings. They are a compact size perfect for first aide kits and purses too!
What you need:
Optional: dried Calendula (not nessesary but Calendula is extra healing and soothing for skin issues.)
Simply pour the castor oil into the roller bottles, snap them shut, and roll on any bug bite or insect sting to take the ow away.
If you want the extra healing of Calendula you will want to infuse the dried Calendula in castor oil for several days-a week, shaking gently daily. I suggest using a glass container such as a mason jar for this. Strain out the solids using a fine mesh strainer and put the infused oil into the roller bottles.
The castor oil is very thick so you may need to tip the funnel to get it to flow easier.
These roller bottles can also be used for hair growth (rolled on head or on eyelids to grow lashes), to ease muscle pains, help you sleep (applied on feet), and many other uses. I suggest making different roller bottles labeled for different uses.

Pinkeye

Pinkeye is one of the most annoying complaints. There’s nothing worse than painful, swollen, itchy, goopy, watery eyes. Here is a mix of homeopathic and natural remedies for pinkeye.
Natural Remedies
Castor oil– rubbed on the eyelids at night. Check out this website for more info
Colloidal Silver– used like eyedrops
Vitamin B2– a B2 deficiency can show up at pinkeye
Homeopathy
Belladonna– for blood shot eyes and sudden start. 30c 3-4 times a day for 3 days
Pulsatilla: calmer start to pinkeye
Euphrasia: Allergy (
Allium Cepa: Allergy (watery itchy eyes similar to cutting onions feeling)
Aconite: thin watery eye discharge. Feels hot, swollen, and a gritty, sand-like sensation in the eyes
Borax: (best homeopathic for children) Helps with firmly stick or be stuck together forming a mass on the eyelids
Argentum Nitricum: prescribed when copious discharge containing mucus and pus in eye are present with sticky eyelids.

“Born with a silver spoon in your mouth” was used to describe that the person was wealthy and spoiled.
Silver has been used by man as early as 4000BC. Containers, coins, utensils, and much more were all used in weatlthy homes much like a status symbol, but it also has hidden health benefits. We all know wealth is health and what they discovered was the people who ate and drank from silver containers didn’t get sick as often. Turns out silver is antibacterial and anti fungal. When needles made of silver were used, the chance of infection was lessened. Undercooked meat and contaminated foods were less risky when placed on a tray made of silver and eaten with silver utensils vs. ones hands. Healthier people could work more and get more out of life than if one was more sickly.
In 1880-1890s when Edison discovered electricity researchers used the electric currents in silver rods suspended in water to create the first colloidal silver. It became a mainstay antibiotic treatment used worldwide by various names such as Collargol, Protargol, Electrargol, Lunaso, etc.
A colloidal is basically a way to describe a very teeny tiny particle of something (silver, gold, copper, etc) suspended in something (like water, alcohol, etc). So tiny you can’t see it, but still carries the same properties of the whole product.
Silver is anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, and anti-inflammatory. It has a wide variety of uses such as for wound care and infections, pinkeye, ear infection, immune boosting for colds and flu and much more. It’s also safe to use on animals. We give our day old chicks colloidal silver in their water to keep their water clean and chicks are healthier. We’ve treated many rabbits with various sickness or wounds. We’ve even used it in our aquarium to boost the health of our fish. A popular aquarium additive called “Fungistop” contains colloid silver.
It can also be used in cleaning and disinfecting surfaces.
A small family with no animals would do fine with buying a bottle every few months. We would stock up in fall in prep for cold/flu season. As a large farm family we go through quite a lot and so we are making our own now.

Wait a minute… cant colloidal silver turn your skin blue??
So let’s dig into the story of “the blue man”. His name was Paul Karason and he lived in Washington state. He had various health issues and made a homemade “colloidal silver” to which he both drank and rubbed on his skin for many years. Only one issue: he added salt to his “colloidal silver” which created instead -silver chloride colloidal. Silver chloride is normally a white substance, except when it gets exposed by sunlight (see here). Since Paul Karason rubbed the colloid solution of silver chloride on his skin, it absorbed, and as he went outside the chemical reaction turned his skin purplish-blue color.
Pure Colloidal Silver will, therefore, not have this result.
